BiographyNet: Managing Provenance at Multiple Levels and from Different Perspectives
نویسندگان
چکیده
The BiographyNet project aims at inspiring historians when setting up new research projects. The goal is to create a semantic knowledge base by extracting links between people, historic events, places and time periods from a variety of Dutch biographical dictionaries. A demonstrator will be developed providing visualization and browsing techniques for the knowledge base. In order to establish its credibility as a serious research tool, keeping track of provenance information is crucial. This paper describes a schema that models provenance from di↵erent perspectives and at multiple levels within BiographyNet. We will present a concrete model for the BiographyNet demonstrator that uses elements from the Europeana Data Model [6], PROV-DM [17] and P-PLAN [11].

Multi-Scale Science: Supporting Emerging Practice with Semantically Derived Provenance
Scientific progress is becoming increasingly dependent on our ability to study phenomena at multiple scales and from multiple perspectives. The ability to recontextualize thirdparty data within the semantic and syntactic framework of a given research project is increasingly seen as a primary barrier in multi-scale science. Within the Collaboratory for Multi-Scale Chemical Science (CMCS) project...
متن کاملBiographyNet: Methodological Issues when NLP supports historical research
When NLP is used to support research in the humanities, new methodological issues come into play. NLP methods may introduce a bias in their analysis that can influence the results of the hypothesis a humanities scholar is testing. This paper addresses this issue in the context of BiographyNet a multi-disciplinary project involving NLP, Linked Data and history. We introduce the project to the NL...
متن کاملA Brief Tour through Provenance in Scientific Workflows and Databases
Within computer science, the term provenance has multiple meanings, due to different motivations, perspectives, and assumptions prevalent in the respective communities. This chapter provides a high-level “sightseeing tour” of some of those different notions and uses of provenance in scientific workflows and databases.
متن کاملProvenance for Web 2.0 Data
In this paper, we look at Web data that comes from multiple sources, as in the Web 2.0. We argue that Web data is more than just its content. Rather, a piece of Web data carries along different facets, such the transformations that data underwent, the different perspectives that users have on the content, and the context in which a statement is made. We put forward the idea that provenance, i.e...
متن کاملLayering in Provenance Systems
Digital provenance describes the ancestry or history of a digital object. Most existing provenance systems, however, operate at only one level of abstraction: the system call layer, a workflow specification, or the high-level constructs of a particular application. The provenance collectable in each of these layers is different, and all of it can be important. Single-layer systems fail to accou...
